Birmingham Brummies
After three consecutive defeats in their new Elite League environment, Birmingham finally experienced the sweet taste of success at Perry Barr last night as they beat King’s Lynn Stars by the narrowest of margins, 46-43 in their final challenge match outing. Birmingham did however lose the two-legged Elite Elevation Trophy affair on aggregate 84-99.
Brummies again used Rene Bach at number three and welcomed back Kevin Wolbert at number 7 in place of James Wright. With Krzysztof Kasprzak showing his best form at Perry Barr and Daniel Nermark finding his feet plus a better score from Danny, the prospects look good for Birmingham ahead of the visit of the mighty Poole Pirates next Monday in Brummies first Elite League action.
Danny started in superb fashion in a re-run heat three as he beat Dane Mads Korneliussen from the back on the inside on the fourth bend of lap four to take the win and send Brummies fans into raptures, That 4-2 with Rene Bach in third helped reduce the arrears after a poor start by Birmingham, the score was now 8-10. Danny’s gating was again not at its best in heat 5 when he had to work hard from the back to pass Czech Tomas Topinka, although he’d left himself too much to do to catch Kenneth Bjerre and had to settle for second place.
Heat ten was re-run after edginess from Danny caused the referee to order an unsatisfactory start re-staging and then he was outdone by Niels Kristian Iversen’s only victory of the night. At this stage the Brummies held a slender one point lead at 27-26. A heat ten 5-1 from Dryml and Kasprzak put Birmingham on a more comfortable level and then Danny’s heat win and subsequent 4-2 with Kevin Wolbert over Mads Korneliussen and Filip Sitera gave Birmingham the platform to seal things in the final heat, which they did through Kasprzak. With Ben Barker in the side at number three, there is no doubt that this team have the clout to do some damage at Perry Barr as the season develops.
Danny will be satisfied with his ten point display (3,2,2,3) and now looks ahead to an appearance in Adam Skornicki’s Testimonial at Monmore Green, Wolverhampton on Sunday (4pm) where he will ride for an Oxford select side in a four team tournament style event,
“I was pleased with how the meeting went this evening and especially pleased with my bike set-up. I think that we finally have something that works. I’d like to thank the Birmingham fans for their support so far but I think I showed everyone tonight that I still have some work to do on my starts, so I will concentrate on that now. It was also great for the team to finally get a win under our belts.”
After the testimonial outing on Sunday, the serious stuff begins as Danny lines up with his Brummies team mates against the Poole Pirates in the first Sky Sports televised Elite League meeting of the season on Monday evening (28th March @ 7.30pm) at Perry Barr stadium.
Birmingham 46 Krzysztof Kasprzak 11+1, Ales Dryml 7+1, Rene Bach 1, Danny 10, Daniel Nermark 8, Theo Pijper 2+2 and Kevin Wolbert 7.
King’s Lynn 43 Kenneth Bjerre 11, Tomas Topinka 3+1, Olly Allen 5, Mads Korneliussen 7+2, Niels Kristian Iversen 5+1, Sam Masters 7+1 and Filip Sitera 4.
