Birmingham Brummies
Birmingham succumbed to a heavy defeat at Monmore Green against Wolverhampton as Wolves sealed this West Midlands Trophy affair with a resounding 57-36 win to take the two-legged contest 103-80 on aggregate.
Brummies were forced into one change following unfortunate Claus Vissing’s broken wrist on opening night at Perry Barr as Dutch racer Theo Pijper replaced him but there were also outings for the two ‘other’ double-up riders in the Birmingham squad as Dane Rene Bach slotted in at number 3 and Edinburgh’s German racer Kevin Wolbert came into the side at number 7.
Danny started well and would have been pleased with his heat three win over Tai Woffinden on his own circuit. That heat was won pretty much from the gate which would have equally have pleased King after an inconsistent night at the tapes at Perry Barr last Thursday. Two further second places followed in heats seven and ten. In the latter, Danny out gated GP Swedish star Freddie Lindgren before the Wolves number one impressed his superiority on the race. Promising signs however that Danny is finding his feet at the start line which will be vital in the weeks ahead.
At that stage the meeting was 37-26 in favour of the Wolves, a lead they were only likely to increase. Peter Karlsson and Freddie Lindgren both remained unbeaten by an opponent and unfortunately for Danny he wasn’t able to add any further to his impressive start to proceedings. A last place in heat 14 when on the Brummies second tactical ride (Ales Dryml had won their first in heat 8) when Danny was forced out after a tight first lap was followed by another in the nominated heat as the tough pairing of Karlsson and Woffinden gated to leave the Brummies on the end of a 5-1 and an overall 57-36 defeat.
Overall, it was another satisfactory if not spectacular meeting for Danny who can and will do better as the season unfolds and he had this to say after the meeting;
“I was happy once again with the early part of last night but I had a few issues towards the end with the deteriorating track conditions and my bikes. In a way this was good because we discovered what set-ups work in what conditions and obviously what don’t and that’s exactly what these challenge matches are for”.
King now has just a couple of days to prepare his machinery and concentrate his focus ahead of back-to-back challenge meetings with King’s Lynn Stars, at the Norfolk Arena on Wednesday evening followed by the return at Perry Barr on Thursday at 7.45pm.
Wolverhampton 57. Freddie Lindgren 10+2 (paid max), Ludvig Lindgren 8+1, Ty Proctor 6+2, Tai Woffinden 12+1, Peter Karlsson 15 (max), Tyson Burmeister 2+2 and Ricky Wells 4.
Birmingham 36. Krzysztof Kasprzak 5, Ales Dryml 10+2, Rene Bach 3+1, Danny 7, Daniel Nermark 2, Theo Pijper 2 and Kevin Wolbert 7.
