On a night that promised so much, this became a night of frustration for Danny King in Italy where his Grand Prix qualification bit the dust for another season at the slick and dusty Lonigo track.

It’s certainly no disgrace to go out at the semi-final stage of any competition, and you only have to look at the quality riders that have fallen at this point in the other rounds this season; Darcy Ward, Magnus Zetterstrom, Niels-Kristian Iversen, Davey Watt etc, to realise that this is speedway in its toughest form.

The meeting started reasonably well for Danny with two second places in heats one and seven when he was beaten to the flag each time by Kevin Wolbert and Grzegorz Walasek respectively. What hurt him badly however was the solitary one point gained from his next two rides in heats 11 and 15 when his gating eluded him on a track where trapping is such an important asset to have. Danny did however finish in style with a last ride heat win in race 19, which was not quite enough on the night as he overcame Cameron Woodward and Tobi Kroner on this occasion to complete a frustrating nights racing.

Further chances will come around in this competition for Danny but in the meantime all focus is directed to domestic matters once again with important home and away meetings for the Birmingham Brummies next week against Wolverhampton in the Sky Sports Elite League.
