It was hard to see what further effort and commitment Danny King could have put into his night’s racing at the British Final event but he was unable to emulate his fourth place heroics of a year ago at Monmore Green, Wolverhampton. On a night when Tai Woffinden was unbeaten in the main meeting before Scott Nicholls made it six British title wins in the all important final, Danny scored five points that could have so easily have been the 10 required to sneak into a semi-final slot.
His gating was possibly of the best standard it has been for some time, and time after time King got into great positions on the first lap only to appear to choose the wrong line or not have the speed when it mattered most. That certainly summed up heats 15 and 19 perfectly as Danny lead down the back straight of lap one in both races only to be passed by the other three contenders in heat 15 and Leigh Lanham on the line in his final outing in heat 19.
You have to wonder what would have happened on a faster track such as a Peterborough or a King’s Lynn where there is more room to gather speed and pass, both traits which suit Danny’s game much more than the technical confines of Monmore Green but that said there appeared to be plenty of dirt early on. It just seemed that Danny is crying out for a faster engine with his GP qualifier in Denmark only a fortnight away. That, and a little more luck, coupled with another two weeks to get over his recent injuries and it could well be a different story by that time.
Danny is next in action this Thursday 9th June at the Perry Barr Stadium where Birmingham take on Lakeside in the KO Cup (tapes up 7.45pm) before the return at the Arena Essex Raceway on Friday evening (8pm).
